Rabbits

Image
I have something super precious for you today: Bunnies. After two rabbits showed up in my yard, I decided I had to do a blog about them. My visitors looked like any of the brownish-gray bunnies in the photos below. I only saw each of them a few times. Once, when I went out to shut the water off, I saw the baby bunny in my northwest island next to one of the Party-Plant Lantana. He was only ten feet away. He froze then eyed me for about fifteen seconds, then hopped into the lantana and disappeared from sight. I let him be hoping he'd stick around. I will treasure this memory for a long time. Unfortunately, that was over a week ago and I'm sorry to say, I haven't seen him again. The other bunny, who was full-grown, used to come in to do some chomping then would sit on the tall rock at the back of the garden and groom himself. I'd never been around rabbits, so it surprised me when he cleaned his face and his ears then took to licking the fur on his stomach. It was so cat...

Elderberries

Image
Elderberry wine has been in my consciousness since I can remember. But I've never had a glass of it. I've never seen or tasted an elderberry and I can't recall the source of my memory. My best guess is that it was in a book I read many years ago or perhaps in a movie or TV show. So, when I saw photos of elderberries, I knew I wanted to bring the topic here because I am sure many of you have either made the wine yourselves or sampled elderberries in desserts or cordials.  First, a small bit of folklore about the elderberry shrub/tree. Some lore insists that the elder tree can ward off evil and protect against witches. While other lore says that witches like to gather beneath the trees while they're in full fruit. Maybe I'll have one of my witches in the Flame Series have an elder tree in her backyard, lol! Lynx

Image
Lynx I love cats. I always have. I grew up with them which I know makes a huge difference in terms of having an affection for the feline species. I've also been fascinated by the 'big' cats in our world, like lions and tigers. One of my characters in the Rapture's Edge series has a pet leopard. The character, Yolanthe, is quite unlikable except for her love for her leopard. Lynx are unique in the cat world because of their stubby tails and the tufts of fur at the tips of their pointed ears. Isn't that a beautiful face? Nature absolutely amazes me. Look at the design and variety in this animal, in its coat and coloring, the tufts, the nose, the dark mouth. What's not to love? Or if not to love, then to admire? FunFacts about the Lynx ( Source ) ( Source ) There are four species of lynx, the bobcat being one of them. Lynx have compact legs, stubby tails and pointed tufts of fur at the tops of their ears designed to aid their hearing. They are sho...

Machu Picchu

Image
Machu Picchu This world renowned landmark is a fascinating ancient Inca estate located high in the Andes Mountains of Peru. I'd heard the name 'Machu Picchu' many times, but I didn't have a mental picture associated with the name. All I knew was that it was in the mountains somewhere in the world. Yes, I'm always amazed at how much I don't know and how much there is to learn. As I was cruising Pixabay this past weekend, I saw the famous landmark and I immediately recognized the ancient ruins. When I saw the name, it was a big a-ha! Finally, the name and the place came together: Machu Picchu. I'll be curious to see how many of you have a similar experience.  Machu Picchu is at almost 8000 feet. When I look at the nature of the terrain as well as the altitude, I'm stunned at what was created around this extraordinary peak of the Andes. Like the rice terraces of Banaue , Machu Picchu is a feat of engineering. Some of the photos will show the steep...
